The Yellow and Orange Colors of a Sorority

On my way to turn in some forms to the Study Abroad Office on campus last week I passed by a sorority. It was a gorgeous day: the sun was shining, there was a light breeze, and it was around 75 degrees. All of the girls of the sorority were sitting on the front lawn, basking in the sun.

I nearly tripped on my own feet as I did a double-take at the 15-20 girls on the sorority's front lawn. It was like staring at cloned Barbie dolls in sunglasses. Every single one of them were blonde, but I could tell that only a few were actual blondes. But that was not the worst of it...

...All of the girls had fake tans. Their color was so bad that half of them had more of an orange skin tone than a tan appearance. It truly looked as though the Oompa-Loompas had escaped from Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

I don't hate all sororities or anything like that. But I have a serious problem with sororities whose members have cult-like appearances. These are the type of sororities that made me stay away from them altogether during my college experience. Since when did college become like middle and high school where you have to look a certain way to fit in and be accepted?

Two-Faced

Until last night, I've never even come close to getting into a fight with another human being. However, I also feel that I did nothing wrong to bring about what was said and done to me last night, both behind my back and in person.

I worked until midnight and promised "B" I'd make an appearance at his house to celebrate his birthday with him. I didn't want to stay very long sice I really wasn't feeling that well. As soon as I walked through the door I noticed that "A" and her daughter continuously glared at me like I was the scum of the earth. I chose just to ignore it and tried to talk and hang out with other people.

At one point a group of us were in the kitchen. "T" and I were sitting at the bar, which is just on the other side of the sink, talking about my trip to Rome. "A" dropped a bunch of ice on the floor and I asked her if she wanted any help picking it up. She got up, holding a bunch of ice in her hand and blatantly screamed, "Not from you!!" at me and literally threw the ice in the sink in anger, with a few pieces hitting me in the face. I was totally taken aback. I looked at "T" and he told me not to say anything to her, which I didn't plan on it. Instead, I silently went to the door, grabbed my purse and coat and walked outside. I was leaving.

I felt bad for not saying goodbye to "B" so I called him to tell him sorry, but that I really couldn't stay in that atmosphere. He came outside and I was crying at this point, asking him what I did wrong. He told me that even before I got there that "A" was making fun of me for getting broken up with. He couldn't believe her attitude toward me. And I told him that I was done trying to be nice to her, that she was nice to me before I got into a relationship and then was so mean to me after I was in one, treating me horribly. I'm not the type of person to say anything back to her, so I just did my best to ignore those things, even though they went on for like 7 1/2 months.

"A" decided to follow me outside and got right in my face, yelling at me for supposedly making fun of her. She'd heard this from "someone." In a calm voice, I replied that I had no idea what she was talking about, but that it upset me that she couldn't just talk to me like a normal person. She continued to yell at me and got so close to my face that I could literally feel her spit on my face. I just stood there and finally decided to let out some of my own anger. I told her that she needed to grow up and that I was unhappy with the way she'd been treating me these past months when I did nothing wrong to her. I then told her that I was no longer going to try to be her friend and that this was basically the last straw. I finally told her that the conversation was over, turned my back to her, and I walked to my car. As I was opening my door I heard her throw her drink on the ground in anger, ice splattering everywhere. I started my car and drove off.

Even though I did nothing to provoke this, I still feel like a horrible person. I feel like I ruined "B's" birthday party.

On top of everything else, I started crying pretty hard while driving home. My Costochondritis then decided to rear its ugly head and I started having chest pains. Bad chest pains. After arriving home my breathing became constricted, I felt like bricks were pushing on my chest. I woke my dad up so I could use his inhaler, praying that it would help my breathing. It took a while, but it finally did. However, sleep was restless on account of the emotional and physical pain that I continued to struggle with overnight. I just kept asking myself how someone 40 years of age could act like that? What could I have done differently? Am I never going to be able to hang out with "the group" again?....

...Obviously, these questions are still plaguing me...
