The Mind of a Child

"Waxen Rainbow"

Every summer she, her friends, and her brothers, enjoyed the break from the seemingly ceaseless homework assignments. They truly treasured their adventures outdoors. Their favorite days were ones in which the heat was so intense that waves of steam would rise off the concrete, creating an ocean of little mirage spots.

The heat did not trap them in their homes like so many others trying to escape what they thought was unbearable summer weather. Instead, the humidity created an entirely new way for these children to play. With their expansive imaginations, the mirages became hot spots of lava spewing from a very dangerous and very active volcano. They used fallen trees, giant boulders, and each other to escape the clutches of the immense volcano and its projectiles.

One summer she left an entire box of Crayolas on her driveway where the sun would reach them. She carefully peeled each wrapper and laid them one by one in a large arc shape. The sun melted each crayon, turning her concoction into a stunning waxen rainbow. She would go and study that rainbow on especially hot days, watching the melted wax flow just a bit further each time.

It was an especially hot summer day when she and her family moved from that house filled with so many memories, both real and imagined. As the last useless items were loaded into the van, she paid one last visit to her waxen rainbow. With an innocent finger she traced each colored spot, noticing that their trails matched the dripping of the tears splasing off her face on top of them...

Quote of the Day: "A teacher is like an eternal flame because it is their responsibility to ignite a ceaseless, burning passion for learning, critical thinking, and open-mindedness in each and every one of their students."
